Smarter Design / Smarter Engineering / SMARTAIR DIFFUSION™
The SMARTEMP Inclined Floor-Swirl Diffuser, type ISF-AD, is a patent-pending, low-profile floor swirl diffuser designed to maximise personal comfort control via user-adjustment of air pattern (vertical-inclined), air direction (inclined rotation) and airflow rate (low-high). Uniquely, personal comfort control is retained even when the diffuser is equipped with an optional electric-actuator VAV kit. This is done via air pattern and air direction adjustment by the user, while the discharged airflow rate is determined by motorised variable air volume (VAV) system control. Additionally, air pattern, air direction and/or airflow rate may be pre-configured or locked, making the diffuser highly adaptable to office fitout changes or suitable for applications where user-adjustment is to be restricted or is not desired.
Personal Comfort Control
The Inclined Floor-Swirl diffuser provides the user with complete customised comfort via a combination of personalised air pattern, air direction and airflow rate adjustment. An optimal personal climate is achieved by tailoring the user’s local thermal environment to suit not just temperature, but also air motion preferences.
- Personal Air Pattern
If the diffuser is configured during assembly to allow user-adjustment of the vertical-to-inclined discharge pattern then the pattern of the discharged air may be user-adjusted from a diffused vertical plume, for extremely low air motion at substantially the same temperature as the room air, to an inclined and more concentrated air stream that is a gentle directional breeze.
- Personal Air Direction
Further user-rotation of the diffuser face directs the inclined air stream towards or away from the user, targeting the directional breeze to sculpt a unique personal climate.
- Personal Airflow Rate
When configured to a user-adjustable vertical-to-inclined discharge pattern, more air is discharged by the inclined air pattern setting than by the vertical setting, amplifying the targeted cooling/heating effect of the directionally inclined air pattern. If the diffuser is, instead, configured (during assembly) to either a fixed vertical or a fixed (but rotatable) inclined pattern, then the discharged airflow rate may be increased or decreased by simple rotation of the swirl face. Additionally, when set to the targeted inclined air pattern, user airflow rate adjustment is achieved with substantially constant throw to head-height of seated occupants. This averts the discomfort of cold-feet/warm-head created by industry-standard user-adjustable floor swirl diffusers.
Personal Comfort VAV
An optional electric actuator kit may be attached to the Inclined Floor-Swirl Diffuser underside to vary the delivered cooling/heating capacity. This is achieved via variable air volume (VAV) adjustment (from a BMS / control system, by others) of a damper in the diffuser that increases or decreases the discharged airflow rate. Personal comfort control via user-adjustment of air pattern and air direction are available even with motorised VAV control. The preferred individual thermal environment is both automated and tailored, and hence enhanced. Additionally, when the discharge pattern is set by the user to a targeted inclined air pattern – to maximise the diffuser cooling/heating effect – electric VAV turndown from 100% to 45% is achieved with substantially constant throw to head-height of seated occupants. This averts the unwelcome sensation of cold-feet/warm-head when the VAV flow rate is turned down. When the air pattern is user-adjusted to the diffused vertical setting – for a reduced cooling/heating effect – the electric VAV range is shifted downwards to a maximum of 65% and a minimum of 10%, complimenting the diluted effect of the broadly dispersed vertical plume by further diminishing the local thermal influence of the discharged air. The minimum airflow setting can at all times be increased electrically, via the BMS / control system, to achieve both the energy savings and indoor air quality (IAQ) advantages of zone-level demand-controlled ventilation (DCV). This is best done dynamically, in response to CO2 levels measured at about head-height of seated occupants in the space.
Displacement Cooling
When cooling, high induction, upward swirl discharge from the Inclined Floor-Swirl diffuser produces rapid discharge velocity decay and intense supply-to-room air temperature equalisation with throw substantially restricted to the head height of seated occupants. Cool supply air gently spreads in the occupancy microclimate as displacement airflow, replenishing air rising by convection from heat sources in the space. An occupancy microclimate of enhanced indoor air quality is created, as heat and entrained contaminants stratify at a high level, to be removed in concentrated form. Enhanced levels of indoor air quality and draught-free cooling comfort are achieved in the occupancy-level microclimate.
Due to stratification of heat, relatively large supply-to-return temperature differentials are achievable – dependent upon ceiling height – despite the comparatively high supply air temperature of about 18°C (relative to high-level mixed flow) that is required to prevent draughts from such low-level supply. Large supply-to-room temperature differentials allow airflow rates required for cooling, and hence fan energy consumption, to be minimised. Energy savings also accrue from the extended free-cooling range often achieved by the elevated supply air temperature (more days per year are available for economiser cooling if the outdoor air does not need to be as cold), as well as from the potential to reduce outdoor airflow rates when not in economiser mode due to the enhanced indoor air quality of the occupancy microclimate.
Swirl Heating
The Inclined Floor-Swirl Diffuser’s high-induction, floor-level swirl discharge ensures extremely effective heating performance, due to cool room air, which pools above the floor, being scavenged by the diffuser’s high aspiration rate, with thorough mixing diffusing the warm supply air into the occupancy space.
Adaptable Design
The Inclined Floor-Swirl Diffuser may be configured to provide personal control of air pattern, air direction and air motion, or to only allow the user to adjust the airflow rate of the pre-set vertical or inclined discharge pattern, or to only adjust – by rotation – the direction of the inclined discharge pattern. Complete comfort control is provided. Alternatively, the diffuser may be configured to provide no user-adjustability at all, for applications where user-adjustment is not required or is not desirable. The discharge pattern may be configured during assembly to suit the application, eg to a fixed, diffused and vertical setting for transient spaces, or to a targeted and rotatable inclined setting adjacent to work stations. The latter provides airflow and targeted air motion control only where required and has the added advantage that the inclined air pattern allows diffusers to be located close to seated occupants without creating draughts, improving both co-ordination and comfort. The Inclined Floor-Swirl Diffuser’s multi-configurable design not only provides adaptability to the largely differing requirements of offices, meeting rooms and transient spaces, but is also highly flexible to tenancy fitout changes and to changes from the initial base-building design.
Flexible Location
Given its low profile depth of 97/170 mm without/with VAV actuator, respectively, the Inclined Floor-Swirl Diffuser is well suited to underfloor air distribution systems (UFAD) with constrictions or a shallow floor plenum, facilitating optimised diffuser location.
Construction
The SMARTEMP ISF-AD Inclined Floor-Swirl Diffuser is suitable for use in pressurised access floor air distribution systems, and includes a rapid-mount assembly feature that provides quick and easy installation or relocation without the need for tools or for access from below. The diffuser may, optionally, be supplied with a side-entry plenum (connection box) suitable for ducted air supply. An aesthetically appealing face design, available in textured plastic or surface treated aluminium, compliments contemporary decor and is available in a multitude of custom colours.
